Datacenter Facilities Technician
The job description
Tech stack. UPS systems (battery and flywheel), diesel generators and paralleling, BMS monitoring and alarming, CRAC/CRAH units, electrical safety (LOTO, arc flash), preventive maintenance procedures, infrared thermography, power quality meters
About the role
You will maintain the critical facilities infrastructure at an enterprise datacenter where the IT load depends entirely on the power and cooling systems you keep healthy. UPS batteries, diesel generators, chillers, air handlers, and fire suppression are your responsibility, and your preventive maintenance is what stands between normal operations and a very bad day. You will inspect, test, maintain, and respond across all shifts, keeping the facility within its operating envelope and every system ready for the moment it is needed most. You will participate in commissioning of new facilities infrastructure, witnessing tests and building the operational knowledge that makes you effective on day one of live operations. Your maintenance records will support uptime certifications that customers pay a premium for.
What you will achieve
- Execute preventive maintenance schedules with 100 percent on-time completion across UPS, generators, cooling, and fire suppression systems, with zero overdue critical tasks.
- Maintain generator readiness with monthly start testing and annual load-bank testing, achieving successful start rates above 99 percent and documented fuel and coolant readiness.
- Detect developing failures early through thermal imaging rounds, vibration checks, oil analysis, and BMS trend review, preventing at least two unplanned events per year with documented catches.
- Respond to facilities alarms within SLA with correct diagnosis on arrival, restoring normal operation or escalating to engineering with complete context and data.
- Keep maintenance documentation complete and audit-ready at all times, supporting uptime certifications, customer audits, and insurance inspections without findings.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years maintaining critical facilities infrastructure: UPS, generators, HVAC, or similar systems in 24/7 environments.
- Understanding of electrical safety: lockout-tagout, arc flash awareness, and safe work practices around energized equipment up to 480V and above.
- Experience with BMS or building automation systems for monitoring, alarming, and trend analysis.
- Ability to read electrical one-line diagrams, mechanical schematics, and control sequences.
- Strong procedural discipline and detailed, honest maintenance record-keeping.
- High school diploma or equivalent; trade certifications valued.
Nice-to-haves
- EPA 608 certification for refrigerant handling and recovery.
- Experience supporting Uptime Institute Tier III (or higher) certified facilities and their operational requirements.
- Familiarity with generator paralleling switchgear and automatic transfer schemes.
- Knowledge of battery maintenance and testing methods (impedance, load testing).
