Datacenter Decommissioning Technician
The job description
Tech stack. Secure data destruction (wiping, degaussing, shredding), asset retirement workflows, chain-of-custody documentation, hardware refurbishment triage, parts harvesting, e-waste compliance, inventory reconciliation, certificates of destruction
About the role
You will retire datacenter hardware at a large enterprise undergoing a multi-year datacenter consolidation, processing thousands of servers out of production each quarter. Your work carries serious data protection responsibility: every drive must be wiped or destroyed to standard with certificates proving it, and your chain-of-custody documentation is what auditors, regulators, and the legal team rely on. You will decommission cleanly, maximize residual value through refurbishment triage, and ensure zero data-bearing assets leave the chain unaccounted for. Every asset you process represents both a security obligation and a financial recovery opportunity, and your discipline protects the company on both fronts simultaneously. You will also support audit requests with complete decommission records, giving auditors the documented evidence they need without scrambling. Your throughput will keep consolidation timelines on track while your compliance record stays spotless.
What you will achieve
- Decommission hardware to schedule with 100 percent data destruction compliance: every drive wiped, degaussed, or shredded to policy with certificates of destruction filed and reconciled.
- Maintain perfect chain-of-custody documentation from decommission ticket through final disposition, with zero unaccounted data-bearing assets across all your projects.
- Maximize asset recovery value by accurately triaging equipment into reuse, refurbishment, parts harvesting, and recycling streams based on condition and market data.
- Reconcile decommissioned assets against CMDB and asset databases with complete accuracy, closing the loop so finance and capacity planning trust the numbers.
- Execute decommission work safely and cleanly: proper lifting, ESD practice, cable removal discipline, and rack space left ready for the next deployment.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of datacenter hardware experience with knowledge of server components, drive types, and data-bearing assets.
- Understanding of data destruction standards and methods (NIST 800-88 concepts, wiping, degaussing, physical destruction) and their appropriate application.
- Meticulous documentation discipline: serial tracking, certificates, chain-of-custody forms completed accurately every time.
- Awareness of data protection regulations and the consequences of mishandling data-bearing assets.
- Ability to work efficiently to decommission throughput targets without skipping compliance steps.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with ITAD (IT asset disposition) vendor management and auditing.
- Familiarity with e-waste regulations (R2, e-Stewards) and responsible recycling certification.
- Knowledge of equipment refurbishment, testing, and resale processes.
- Understanding of export control considerations for used hardware.
