Datacenter Cabling Technician
The job description
Tech stack. Fiber optic installation and termination, copper termination (Cat6A), cable testing and certification (certifiers, OTDR), labeling standards and administration, pathway installation, TIA standards, fusion splicing basics, firestopping
About the role
You will install and certify the structured cabling plant at a datacenter builder delivering enterprise and cloud facilities where every link carries production traffic for a decade or more. Your certification records are the proof the plant performs: OTDR traces, copper certification reports, and labeling databases that auditors accept and operations teams trust. You will pull, terminate, test, and document fiber and copper to TIA standards, delivering a plant that passes third-party audit and performs flawlessly from the first day of production. You will build the physical layer that carries every bit of customer traffic, and your certification records will prove its quality for years. Your workmanship will pass the scrutiny of the most demanding third-party auditors. You will stay current with evolving standards and connector technologies as data rates continue to climb.
What you will achieve
- Install and terminate fiber and copper cabling to TIA standards with test pass rates above 98 percent on first certification, across thousands of links per project.
- Deliver complete test documentation for every link: OTDR traces with event tables for fiber, full certification reports for copper, all tied to accurate, consistent labeling.
- Pass third-party installation audits without rework findings through disciplined workmanship on every pull, termination, and dressing detail.
- Meet daily production targets for cable pulls, terminations, and testing without sacrificing quality or cutting corners on bend radius and fill ratios.
- Protect installed cabling from construction damage through proper pathway use, firestopping, and coordination with other trades working in shared spaces.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years installing and terminating structured cabling, ideally in datacenter or other mission-critical environments.
- Proficiency with fiber termination methods (including MPO/MTP) and copper termination to Cat6A standards.
- Hands-on skill with cable certifiers, OTDRs, fiber inspection scopes, and light source/power meter sets.
- Knowledge of TIA standards for pathways, spaces, labeling and administration, bonding and grounding.
- Meticulous documentation and labeling discipline sustained across high-volume production.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- BICSI Installer or Technician certification.
- Fusion splicing experience with acceptable splice loss on single-mode fiber.
- Familiarity with high-density fiber systems and breakout architectures.
- Knowledge of firestopping requirements and listed systems for penetrations.
