Consumer Electronics Hardware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Miniaturized PCB design, rigid-flex, battery integration, wireless coexistence, DFM for high volume, drop and environmental testing, antenna integration, cost engineering, ESD immunity
About the role
You will design the hardware inside consumer products where size, cost, and user experience compete for every cubic millimeter and every cent. Consumer electronics hardware engineers pack remarkable functionality into tiny spaces at price points that demand relentless cost discipline and manufacturing excellence. You will work with industrial designers on beautiful enclosures, with factories on million-unit builds, and with test labs on the drops, spills, and abuse real users inflict daily. The pace is fast, the constraints are brutal, and shipping a beloved product that millions of people carry every day is the reward. You will also drive the DFM reviews with contract manufacturers that keep million-unit builds on schedule, since a beautiful design that cannot be built at volume ships nothing.
What you will achieve
- Design highly integrated, miniaturized hardware using rigid-flex assemblies, stacked PCBs, and custom batteries meeting aggressive size targets
- Deliver products that survive real-world abuse: drop testing, environmental exposure, and ESD immunity validated against rigorous internal standards
- Achieve challenging cost targets through design optimization, supplier negotiation support, and value engineering without compromising quality or reliability
- Resolve wireless coexistence issues in dense multi-radio products through antenna placement, filtering, and shielding strategies validated by measurement
- Support mass production ramp: factory line bring-up, yield improvement programs, and rapid response to build issues at high volume
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing consumer electronics hardware with products shipped at meaningful production volumes
- Experience with miniaturization techniques: rigid-flex design, HDI, 0201/01005 components, and stacked board assemblies
- Understanding of battery integration: protection circuits, fuel gauging, charging systems, and safety requirements including UL and IEC
- Familiarity with wireless technologies in compact products: antenna integration challenges, coexistence debugging, and desense resolution
- Knowledge of DFM for high-volume manufacturing: panelization strategy, test planning, and yield optimization methods
- Experience with environmental and mechanical testing: drop, tumble, temperature, humidity, and ingress protection validation
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with wearable-specific challenges: skin contact materials, tiny batteries, and ultra-low-power system design
- Familiarity with audio hardware: speakers, microphones, and acoustic performance tuning in small enclosures
- Knowledge of sustainability requirements: repairability design, recycled materials, and evolving regulatory trends
- Experience with overseas factory support during NPI builds and production ramp phases
