Computer Hardware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. x86 and ARM platform design, motherboard architecture, PCIe and memory subsystems, platform power management, BIOS/UEFI interaction, performance benchmarking, JTAG debug, thermal validation
About the role
You will design computing platforms: motherboards, processor subsystems, and the high-speed fabrics that connect them into working systems. Computer hardware engineers work at the intersection of silicon and system, where memory bandwidth, PCIe topology, and power delivery determine real-world performance that users actually feel. You will bring up platforms with the latest processors, characterize their behavior under sustained load, and deliver the stable foundation that operating systems and applications take for granted. When a platform is flaky, you are the engineer who finds out whether the problem is silicon, board, firmware, or all three at once.
What you will achieve
- Design motherboard and processor subsystem hardware meeting performance, power, and thermal targets for the target market segment and price point
- Deliver successful platform bring-up with new silicon: power sequencing validation, memory training, PCIe enumeration, and comprehensive stress testing
- Characterize platform performance including memory bandwidth, I/O throughput, and power efficiency with benchmark data that guides product positioning
- Debug complex platform issues spanning hardware, BIOS/UEFI, and OS drivers with systematic, cross-layer analysis and clear documentation
- Create platform design guides and reference materials that enable ODM partners and internal teams to build successfully on your work
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing computer platforms: motherboards, processor boards, or high-performance compute modules that shipped
- Understanding of x86 or ARM platform architecture: chipset functions, memory controllers, PCIe root complexes, and platform power states
- Experience with high-speed memory interfaces including DDR4/DDR5, covering layout constraints, training, and signal integrity validation
- Familiarity with BIOS/UEFI boot flows sufficient to debug platform initialization issues alongside firmware teams effectively
- Lab skills for platform debug: POST card analysis, JTAG, protocol analyzers, and accurate power measurement under load
- Knowledge of platform power management: voltage regulators for processors, power sequencing requirements, and sleep state implementation
- BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with server platforms: multi-socket designs, BMC integration, or rack-level thermal and power considerations
- Familiarity with PCIe switch fabrics, retimers, and signal conditioning techniques for long or lossy channels
- Knowledge of thermal design for high-TDP processors and validation methods under sustained workloads
- Experience with compliance testing for PCIe, USB, or memory interface certification programs
