Commercial Drone Applications Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Customer deployment, mission planning for mapping/inspection/delivery, photogrammetry basics, pilot training, solution scoping, CRM systems, Part 107 operations, data delivery
About the role
You will join a drone technology company as the engineer who turns products into customer outcomes: deploying aircraft for mapping, inspection, and delivery use cases and making sure customers succeed operationally. You sit between engineering and the customer, translating operational needs into working solutions and field feedback into product improvements. Revenue follows successful deployments, and you own the technical side of that success from first site visit to steady-state operations. You will also contribute to proposals and statements of work, ensuring the technical scope the company commits to is achievable in the field within the promised timeline and budget.
What you will achieve
- Lead customer deployments from site survey through operational handoff, delivering working drone operations on schedule and to the customer's definition of done.
- Increase customer success rates by developing application-specific playbooks for mapping, inspection, and delivery missions that scale across accounts.
- Train customer pilots and operators to genuine proficiency, creating training materials and assessments that scale beyond your personal presence.
- Reduce deployment issues by scoping solutions accurately: matching aircraft, sensors, and software configurations to the customer's actual mission requirements.
- Feed structured field feedback to product and engineering teams, driving roadmap improvements grounded in real customer operations.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2-5 years of experience deploying or operating drones commercially in mapping, inspection, delivery, or similar revenue-generating applications.
- FAA Part 107 certification with substantial logged commercial flight hours across varied conditions.
- Strong customer-facing skills: you can run a deployment, train operators, and handle problems professionally while on a customer site.
- Understanding of application workflows: photogrammetry basics for mapping, inspection data capture standards, or delivery logistics and handoff.
- Ability to scope technical solutions: translate customer requirements into the right aircraft, payload, and software configurations.
- Troubleshooting skills across the stack, from RF links to software to airframe issues, in field conditions with limited support.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience with a strong operational track record.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with enterprise drone programs or drone-in-a-box autonomous deployments.
- Background in GIS, surveying, or asset inspection industries and their data standards.
- Familiarity with BVLOS operational concepts, waivers, and airspace coordination.
- Experience building ROI analyses or business cases for drone adoption.
