The job description
Tech stack. corporate technology vision, industry roadmaps (IRDS), M&A technical diligence, government/consortium engagement, distinguished technical staff development, IP strategy
About the role
A semiconductor manufacturer needs a chief technologist as its company-wide technical authority, the person the CEO calls before making the technology bets that define the next decade. You will set the long-term technology vision, advise the board on which capabilities to build, buy, or partner for, and represent the company in industry roadmaps and government programs. Your judgment shapes where the company competes, which markets it can serve, and whether its R&D investments compound or evaporate.
What you will achieve
- Define the 10-year technology vision that guides R&D investment, fab strategy, and product roadmaps, with the credibility to align the entire executive team behind it.
- Drive the company's position in industry roadmaps and consortia, securing partnerships and pre-competitive collaborations that accelerate key capabilities faster than going alone.
- Lead technical diligence on strategic investments and acquisitions, delivering recommendations the board acts on with confidence in the technical assessment.
- Build a distinguished technical staff track that retains top inventors, giving the company's best engineers a growth path that does not require leaving technical work for management.
- Shape the public technical narrative through keynotes, publications, and standards leadership that elevate the company's reputation with customers, partners, and talent.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- PhD in engineering or physics, or equivalent distinction, with 15+ years in the semiconductor industry across multiple technology cycles.
- Widely recognized technical authority with a record of industry-shaping contributions that peers and competitors acknowledge.
- History of advising C-level leadership on technology strategy with measurable business outcomes tied to those recommendations.
- Deep network across the semiconductor ecosystem spanning equipment, materials, EDA, foundries, customers, and research institutions.
- Experience with government programs, CHIPS Act initiatives, or international R&D collaborations, navigating both technical and policy dimensions, and translating program requirements into executable R&D plans.
- Proven ability to attract, retain, and develop world-class technical talent, with former team members now leading major programs across the industry, which is the truest measure of leadership.
Nice-to-haves
- Prior CTO or fellow-level roles at major semiconductor companies with P&L-adjacent influence.
- National academy membership or equivalent honors recognizing technical distinction.
- Experience navigating technology export controls and IP strategy at corporate scale.
