Chief Hardware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Hardware technology strategy, platform architecture, supply chain partnerships, engineering organization leadership, industry representation, make-versus-buy analysis, quality systems
About the role
You will be the company's top hardware authority, setting the technical vision for every electronic product the company ships across all product lines. The chief hardware engineer defines platform strategy, technology bets, and the engineering culture that produces hardware customers never have to think about because it simply works. Your judgment will shape product competitiveness for a decade, influence make-versus-buy decisions worth millions of dollars, and determine whether the company leads or follows in its markets. This is the role where technical excellence meets business judgment, and where your standards become the organization's standards.
What you will achieve
- Own the company hardware technology strategy: platform choices, key technology partnerships, and multi-year investment priorities with clear rationale
- Approve major architecture decisions and technology bets across all product lines with documented rationale and honest risk assessment
- Drive hardware quality and reliability posture company-wide: design standards, review processes, and field performance accountability with metrics
- Represent the company's hardware leadership with key customers, strategic suppliers, and at major industry forums
- Build and retain a world-class hardware organization through rigorous hiring standards, technical career paths, and a genuine mentorship culture
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 15+ years of hardware engineering with industry-recognized achievement across multiple product generations and market cycles
- Demonstrated company-wide or industry-wide technical influence through platforms, architectures, or standards leadership with lasting adoption
- Deep expertise across hardware domains: analog, digital, RF, power, signal integrity, and high-volume manufacturing
- Experience setting technology strategy and making portfolio-level decisions balancing technical merit, business value, and risk
- Executive presence for advising CEOs and boards on technical risk, competitive position, and strategic investment priorities
- Track record of building hardware organizations: hiring exceptional engineers, developing technical leaders, and retaining top talent
- BS in Electrical Engineering; advanced degree preferred for technical credibility at this level
Nice-to-haves
- Significant patent portfolio in hardware design, packaging, or interconnects with commercial impact
- Standards body leadership with published contributions adopted broadly by the industry
- Experience managing hardware organizations through major technology transitions such as analog to digital or copper to optical
- Public technical thought leadership: keynote talks, publications, or widely cited engineering work
