Chief Embedded Software Architect
The job description
Tech stack. Embedded software strategy, multi-domain architecture (bare-metal to Linux), platform economics, technical governance, industry standards, executive communication
About the role
You will join a global industrial conglomerate as the company-wide authority on embedded software, spanning business units in factory automation, energy, and transportation. You set the technical direction that hundreds of embedded engineers follow: which platforms to standardize on, how security and safety are governed, and where the company invests in software capability. This role matters because embedded software is now the primary differentiator in every business unit's products, and without central technical authority the company fragments into incompatible silos.
What you will achieve
- Define and ratify the corporate embedded software reference architecture, adopted by six business units within two years with measurable reuse across product lines, and reviewed annually against technology shifts
- Drive a platform consolidation program that reduces the company's distinct firmware stacks from 20+ to under 8, cutting maintenance cost by 30% while protecting in-flight programs, with savings validated by finance
- Establish the embedded security governance framework (secure boot, SBOM, vulnerability response) applied uniformly across all connected products and audited annually
- Build the distinguished-engineer pipeline for embedded software, growing recognized technical leaders from 2 to 10 across the business units within three years, with a transparent nomination and review process
- Represent the company's embedded technology position externally: keynotes, standards bodies, and strategic vendor partnerships that shape the roadmap in the company's favor
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 15+ years in embedded software with a history of setting technical direction across organizations, not just within teams
- Architect-level fluency from bare-metal through RTOS to embedded Linux, with judgment about where each belongs in a portfolio
- Demonstrated success unifying or consolidating platforms across business units with competing roadmaps and P&Ls
- Deep security and safety literacy: able to set policy for secure development and functional safety at corporate scale
- Executive communication: translating technical strategy into investment decisions for non-technical leadership
- A record of growing senior technical talent and building technical communities across organizational boundaries
- Industry presence: standards participation, keynote-level speaking, or widely adopted open-source work
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with M&A technical due diligence for embedded-heavy acquisitions
- Knowledge of software monetization models for traditionally hardware businesses
- Familiarity with regulatory landscapes across multiple regions and industries
