Body Systems Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. CATIA, Siemens NX, closure mechanism design tools, sealing and NVH references, GD&T, DFMEA, stamping and BIW manufacturing knowledge
About the role
You will join the body engineering team of an automaker responsible for closures and body systems: doors, hoods, decklids, liftgates, and their latches, hinges, seals, and mechanisms. The team owns the systems customers touch and slam every day. This role matters because closure quality is the first thing a customer feels when they approach the vehicle, and your engineering decides whether doors close with a refined thunk or a tinny rattle for the next 15 years. You will own closure systems, sealing, and body electronics integration, the details customers touch and hear every single day. Your tolerance management will protect flush, gap, and sealing performance across temperature extremes and the full build variation of the body shop. You will also lead water management and corrosion protection strategies, validating with rain rigs and salt spray so the vehicle stays rattle-free and rust-free for a decade.
What you will achieve
- Deliver closure systems meeting effort, sealing, and NVH targets with customer clinic scores above program benchmarks
- Cut wind noise and water leak issues to near zero through seal system design validated in wind tunnel and water test
- Own latch, hinge, and check-link specifications with durability validated to 2x customer usage life
- Drive dimensional quality: gap and flush variation within 1 mm across production through tolerance strategy and supplier alignment
- Ship power closure features (power liftgate, soft-close doors) with pinch protection and reliability validated to automotive standards
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in automotive body, closures, or BIW engineering roles
- Strong mechanical design skills in CATIA or NX for sheet metal assemblies and mechanisms
- Deep understanding of closure system components: latches, strikers, hinges, seals, and glass run channels
- Working knowledge of sealing theory, water management, and wind noise paths in body systems
- Proficiency with GD&T and tolerance analysis for gap/flush and fit-and-finish control
- Familiarity with stamping, hemming, and BIW assembly processes and their dimensional implications
- Experience with DFMEA and validation testing for mechanical body systems
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with powered closures: motor selection, anti-pinch sensing, and control logic
- Knowledge of lightweight closure materials: aluminum, composites, and magnesium
- Exposure to pedestrian protection requirements for hood and front-end design
- Background in convertible or specialty closure mechanisms
