Avionics Electrical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. DO-254 design assurance, DO-160 environmental testing, ARINC interfaces, MIL-STD-1553, schematic capture for avionics LRUs, requirements traceability, FMECA, configuration management, VHDL for complex devices
About the role
You will design electrical hardware for avionics line-replaceable units at an aerospace company supplying flight-critical and mission-critical systems to airframers. Every design decision carries certification and safety weight, and your work will fly on aircraft carrying passengers. You will develop avionics electronics under DO-254 design assurance processes, verify them against DO-160 environmental requirements, and produce the documentation package that certification authorities review line by line. You will design electronics that meet DO-254 and DO-160 requirements for airborne equipment, working with systems engineers to trace every requirement from aircraft level down to your schematics. Your hardware will endure vibration, temperature extremes, lightning indirect effects, and EMI environments that ground-based electronics never face. You will document your design assurance process rigorously, because certification authorities review every artifact and your paperwork is as important as your circuits.
What you will achieve
- Deliver avionics circuit designs that pass DO-160 environmental qualification (vibration, temperature, altitude, EMI, lightning) without redesign, through margin-driven design from the start.
- Produce complete DO-254 lifecycle documentation with full requirements traceability from system requirements through detailed design to verification results.
- Design redundant and fault-tolerant architectures meeting the assigned design assurance levels, with failure modes analyzed, mitigated, and verified by test or analysis.
- Support certification reviews with authorities, answering technical findings with analysis and test evidence that closes issues without program delay.
- Drive first-pass success on qualification testing by building derating, margin analysis, and environmental robustness into every design decision from schematic onward.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of electrical design experience, ideally including avionics or other safety-critical hardware with certification exposure.
- Working knowledge of DO-254 objectives and DO-160 test categories and what each demands of the design process.
- Experience with requirements traceability tools and structured verification documentation.
- Strong fundamentals in analog, digital, and power design adapted for harsh aerospace environments.
- Disciplined approach to configuration management, change control, and problem reporting.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Direct experience supporting FAA or EASA certification programs through approval.
- Familiarity with ARINC 429, ARINC 664, or MIL-STD-1553 interface design and testing.
- Background in FMECA or fault tree analysis for avionics systems.
- Knowledge of VHDL or Verilog for complex electronic hardware under DO-254.
