Automotive Safety Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. LS-DYNA, MADYMO, crash test instrumentation, Euro NCAP/IIHS protocols, safety requirements management, HIL safety test benches
About the role
You will join the vehicle safety team of an automaker responsible for protecting occupants and pedestrians in every crash scenario. The team owns crashworthiness, occupant restraint systems, and active safety integration from concept through NCAP testing. This role matters because safety ratings are public, regulations are mandatory, and real families depend on the structures and systems you engineer performing exactly as simulated when metal meets metal. You will lead hazard analysis and risk assessment workshops that surface dangers while designs are still malleable, driving mitigations into requirements rather than bolting them on later. Your crash simulation correlation work will ensure models predict test outcomes before the first prototype is destroyed, saving programs both time and budget. You will also own the safety case documentation that regulators and assessors review, building an argument so well evidenced that approval becomes a formality.
What you will achieve
- Deliver vehicle crash performance achieving 5-star Euro NCAP and Top Safety Pick+ ratings with margin on first official testing
- Cut CAE-to-test correlation gaps to under 5 percent on intrusion and deceleration pulses through model refinement
- Own restraint system tuning: airbag, seatbelt, and seat integration validated across the full occupant and crash mode matrix
- Drive pedestrian protection performance meeting EU and global regulatory requirements without compromising styling targets
- Ship safety sign-off documentation with complete requirements traceability for homologation in all target markets
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in automotive crash safety, restraint systems, or occupant protection roles
- Strong understanding of crash physics: energy absorption, structural load paths, and occupant kinematics
- Proficiency with LS-DYNA or equivalent explicit FEA for crash simulation
- Working knowledge of Euro NCAP, IIHS, and FMVSS test procedures and rating criteria
- Familiarity with restraint components: airbag modules, pretensioners, load limiters, and seat structures
- Experience with crash test execution: instrumentation, high-speed video analysis, and data interpretation
- Rigorous requirements management and traceability discipline
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with MADYMO or similar occupant simulation tools
- Knowledge of battery safety in crash for EVs: intrusion protection and thermal runaway prevention
- Familiarity with ADAS sensor integration for pre-crash systems
- Background in biomechanics or injury criteria research
