Automotive Manufacturing Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Process planning tools, PFMEA/control plans, SPC software (Minitab), CAD, time studies, automation/robotics references, lean manufacturing methods
About the role
You will join the manufacturing engineering team of an automaker responsible for turning designs into vehicles rolling off the line at rate, at quality, and at cost. The team owns process design, tooling, and launch for body, paint, or assembly operations. This role matters because the best vehicle design in the world is worthless if it cannot be built repeatably, and your processes determine whether the plant hits takt time with single-digit defects per thousand. You will design assembly processes and tooling that build the vehicle right thousands of times per day, with error-proofing that makes defects nearly impossible rather than merely detectable. Your line-balance and takt-time work will protect throughput while your PFMEA drives process controls into the stations where failures would be most expensive. You will also lead launch readiness, running trial builds that surface every fixture, fastener, and sequence issue before the line ever runs at rate.
What you will achieve
- Deliver manufacturing processes for new model launches achieving Job 1 readiness: cycle time, ergonomics, and quality gates all validated
- Cut line defects per thousand by 30 percent through error-proofing (poka-yoke), standardized work, and process control plans
- Own PFMEA and control plans for your operations with RPN reduction actions closed before production trials
- Drive tooling and automation specifications: robots, fixtures, and conveyance designed for maintainability and changeover speed
- Ship launch support with issue containment under 24 hours and permanent corrective actions verified in production
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in automotive manufacturing, process, or industrial engineering roles
- Strong understanding of automotive production systems: takt time, line balancing, and lean manufacturing principles
- Proficiency with PFMEA, control plans, MSA, and SPC per AIAG core tools
- Ability to read engineering drawings and translate design intent into feasible processes and tooling
- Familiarity with body shop (welding, joining), paint, or general assembly operations
- Experience with time studies, ergonomics assessment, and operator standardized work
- Structured problem solving on the plant floor: 5 Whys, fishbone, and rapid containment
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with robotics programming or automation integration (PLC basics)
- Knowledge of EV-specific manufacturing: battery pack assembly, HV safety in production
- Exposure to digital manufacturing: digital twins, MES, and traceability systems
- Six Sigma Green Belt or lean certification
