Automation Mechanical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Custom machine design, pneumatics and servo actuation, conveyor and indexing systems, precision fixture design, SolidWorks, safety guarding design, cycle time analysis, tolerance analysis for automation
About the role
You will design custom automation machinery at a systems integrator building assembly and test equipment for the electronics industry. Your machines replace manual labor with repeatable precision: pick-and-place mechanisms hitting micron repeatability, press stations with controlled force profiles, and test fixtures running at takt times measured in seconds. You will design the complete machine, oversee its build in the shop, debug it on the floor, and support installation at the customer site until it runs at rate and passes acceptance. You will design automated machinery and production lines, from concept through commissioning, that run reliably at rate with minimal operator intervention. Your machines will be safe, serviceable, and robust against the variation of real production.
What you will achieve
- Deliver custom machines meeting cycle time, yield, and uptime acceptance criteria, validated during runoff at your facility and again at the customer site with witnessed testing.
- Design robust mechanisms (indexing dials, bowl feeders, pick-and-place gantries, press stations) that run millions of cycles with minimal maintenance and predictable wear part replacement.
- Cut machine debug and commissioning time by designing for adjustability and serviceability from the start: accessible components, clear adjustment points, and diagnostic-friendly layouts.
- Standardize common machine modules (base frames, guarding systems, feeder interfaces, control enclosures) across projects to reduce engineering hours per machine measurably.
- Support installation and startup at customer sites worldwide, achieving formal acceptance sign-off on schedule with complete documentation handover.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing custom automation or special-purpose machinery with machines you can point to in production.
- Strong mechanism design skills: cams, linkages, pneumatic circuits, servo actuation, and precision linear motion.
- Ability to design machine frames for stiffness and vibration, guarding per safety standards, and ergonomic operator interfaces.
- Understanding of machine safety: risk assessment methodology, guarding, interlocks, safety-rated monitored components.
- Hands-on machine build, debug, and runoff experience, not just desk design.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with vision-guided automation, robotics integration, or collaborative applications.
- Familiarity with PLC-controlled machine sequencing from the mechanical design side.
- Background in high-speed (sub-second takt) or precision (micron-level) assembly equipment.
- Knowledge of cleanroom-compatible machine design for electronics or medical customers.
