The job description
Tech stack. C (MISRA), DO-178C, ARINC 653 concepts, PowerPC/ARM, VxWorks or Integrity, MIL-STD-1553/ARINC 429, requirements traceability
About the role
You will join an aerospace avionics company developing flight control and mission systems software for commercial and defense aircraft. The embedded team works under DO-178C, where every line of code traces to a requirement and every requirement traces to a test. This role matters because this software flies: the discipline of the process is what lets hundreds of engineers build systems the public trusts with their lives. You will work shoulder to shoulder with systems engineers and the independent verification team from planning through certification credit.
What you will achieve
- Ship DO-178C Level B software components for a flight control computer through two certification milestones, with all lifecycle data accepted by the certification authority, and no open problem reports at either milestone
- Drive structural coverage to 100% (MC/DC) on your assigned components, with every coverage analysis reviewed and formally accepted by the independent verification team, and coverage evidence stored under configuration control
- Reduce requirements review findings by authoring precise low-level requirements that survive independent review with fewer than 2% defect rates across two review cycles
- Build target-based test harnesses that execute the full verification suite on flight hardware nightly, catching integration issues within 24 hours of introduction, with automated alerts to the responsible developer
- Own the software configuration management for your components, maintaining audit-ready baselines through every design change with complete change traceability, and supporting problem-report closure within agreed timeframes
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2-5 years developing embedded software in aerospace, defense, or another DO-178C (or equivalent) regulated environment
- Strong C with MISRA compliance discipline and experience remediating static analysis findings with documented rationale
- Working knowledge of DO-178C objectives: planning, requirements, design, coding, integration, and verification processes
- Experience with requirements-based testing and bidirectional traceability from requirement to test result
- Familiarity with avionics buses such as MIL-STD-1553 or ARINC 429, or similar deterministic communication
- Experience with a real-time operating system used in avionics such as VxWorks or Integrity
- Comfort with rigorous documentation and formal review processes, including dispositioning every review comment
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with model-based design and autocode (Simulink/Embedded Coder) in a certification context
- Knowledge of ARINC 653 partitioning concepts and their implications for software architecture
- Familiarity with hardware-software integration testing on iron-bird or similar system rigs
