Principal Engineer, Logistics & Material Tracking
SteelSync · Brooklyn, NY · On-site · Full-time
SteelSync is automating the knowledge work behind the largest buildings in the world, starting with structural steel. We're hiring a Principal Engineer to own our most-used product end to end.
Why SteelSync
Designing and building a stadium, data center or chip fab today is a relay of disconnected teams, tools and email threads. One design change can trigger months of manual rework. We're connecting all of it into one system: engineering tools for logistics, connection design and erection planning, orchestrated by an AI layer that runs the process in hours instead of months.
Steel is first. Concrete, mechanical, electrical and plumbing come next.
- Already in production: live with 35+ U.S. steel companies on NFL stadiums, hyperscale data centers, semiconductor plants and SpaceX projects.
- Unmatched industry access: our design partner, W&W | AFCO Steel, is the largest structural steel fabricator and erector in the U.S.
- A small, sharp team: 5 engineers, led by our co-founder and CTO, Jared
The Role
Our material tracking and logistics platform is how steel moves through fab shops and job sites.
Ironworkers use it on rugged Android scanners to find, scan and place every piece. Fabricators use it to track every beam from cut to paint to shipment. It's our product with the most traction, and customers ask for something new every day.
You'll own it. You'll spend time in fab shops and on job sites, decide what matters most and ship it fast. The role starts almost entirely hands-on, with a clear path to building and leading your own team as we grow.
What You'll Do
- Own the product's roadmap and architecture, from customer request to production.
- Triage daily customer feedback, prioritize hard and ship several features a week.
- Get into the field to see how the product is actually used.
- Build software that holds up for people on a job site: reliable, fast and simple.
- Connect your product to our AI layer so agents can track status and assess design changes across projects.
- Work directly with the founders, our customers and W&W | AFCO's experts.
Who You Are
- Exceptionally sharp. You learn new domains fast and reason well through problems you haven't seen before.
- A product owner. You've taken a product from 0 to 1, ideally 1 to 100. You know what to build, not just how.
- Startup-tested. You've done meaningful work at an early or growth-stage startup and do your best work without detailed specs.
- Full stack. You've built and run production web systems end to end.
- Customer-minded. You're comfortable with fabricators and ironworkers and can turn what they say into what they need.
- Self-directed. You show up with "here's what I'm building today," not "what should I build?"
No construction background required. We'll teach you the industry.
Our Stack
TypeScript and JavaScript (web-first, including our field devices), PostgreSQL, AWS, Python for engineering math, and a custom agent harness on OpenAI and Anthropic models. We build with
AI every day.
How We Hire
No LeetCode. Every technical step is a real problem from our business, and you can use any language, tools and AI you want.
1. Intro with our CEO (45 min): a product demo, our story and how you like to work.
2. Technical conversation with one of our co-founders.
3. Remote build exercise with the team.
4. Onsite in Brooklyn (about 5 hours): an estimation problem, an architecture exercise, lunch with the team and a hands-on build.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and meaningful early-stage equity.
- Ownership of a product running on some of the largest construction projects in the world.
- A flat team with direct access to the founders, customers and the field.
- A path from hands-on builder to leading your own team.
SteelSync is an equal opportunity employer.
