About the Team
The Product Software team builds the cloud platform that sits between people and the robot stack. It is everything you need to capture data for, train, deploy to, and manage a fleet of humanoid robots. The team is new, three engineers today under a new VP of Software, and you will be one of the engineers who defines it.
We run a Go backend speaking to robots over WebSockets, a TypeScript and React frontend for internal ops and customer portals, Postgres for data, and Kubernetes and ECS on AWS. Real time video and telemetry, teleoperation, AI assisted task planning, and full stack observability are all in scope.
The team owns two products:
- Developer and research platform. Everything an AI researcher or developer needs to build on NEO: capturing and managing training data, training models, deploying code and models to robots, and eventually a NEO app store.
- Enterprise fleet platform. Everything an operator needs to run hundreds of robots in a facility: onboarding and tracking robots, scheduling repetitive work, managing facilities, locations, and maps, handling charging, and navigating spaces full of doors, people, and obstacles that change constantly.
Under both sits real SaaS: authentication, user profiles, permissions, and strict isolation of customer data. You work on site next to the robots. CI runs with hardware in the loop, so a test can start in a mobile app and end with a robot moving. Embedded, electronics, robotics, and the AI team building our world model sit in the same building.
Your Charter
Own product areas across the full stack: Go backend, TypeScript and React frontend, and the Kubernetes deployment behind 1X's fleet and developer platforms, from the robot cloud protocol to the portals operators and customers use every day. You get a product area described in broad strokes, not a spec. You work out the user workflows, write the requirements, design the system, and ship it.
This is critical path work. We are working with motivated customers and the priority is getting working software into their hands fast. As 1X scales from hundreds to tens of thousands of robots, the performance, reliability, and observability of this platform decide whether the business can operate and whether customers can trust their deployments.
We build with AI coding agents every day. The job is to design the system, direct the agents building it, review what they produce, and own the result. You should be able to explain every part of what ships and how to change it.
Key Outcomes
- Own features end to end across the Go backend, React frontend, and Kubernetes deployment, shipping production work across the full stack without handoffs
- Turn loose product direction into clear requirements and shipped software, working directly with customers, operators, and the robotics teams
- Extend the robot cloud protocol: Go WebSocket services that talk to C++ code on the robot, keeping pace with new hardware capabilities and a growing fleet
- Build fleet operations tooling for maps, facilities, navigation, task scheduling, charging, and teleoperation
- Build the developer platform for data capture, model training, and deploying code and models to robots
- Ship the SaaS foundation: auth, profiles, permissions, and tenant isolation of customer data
- Make the platform measurably more stable over time through instrumentation, structured logging, incident triage, and post mortems
Key Competencies
- Product owner. Has owned a significant product or a large part of one, from requirements through production. Thinks in user workflows first, then code. Drives work forward with little input
- System designer. Designs systems end to end and never stops at the layer boundary. Uses AI agents to build faster without giving up understanding of the code
- Backend leaning full stack. Strongest in Go backend services, fluent enough in TypeScript and React to ship the frontend for what they build
- Concurrency and real time fluency. Comfortable with WebSockets at production scale: auth, reconnection, backpressure, and streaming telemetry and video from a robot fleet. Understands Go's concurrency model in depth
- Robot aware. Cares how the cloud and the robot interact, not just the cloud side
- Infrastructure owner. Knows Kubernetes, CI/CD, and AWS well enough to deploy, debug, and improve the systems their code runs on
- Observability first. Instruments code from the start, reads dashboards and traces fluently, and treats on call as part of the job
Minimum Requirements
- 5+ years building and running production software
- Ownership of a significant product or system, as tech lead for a small team or as the primary owner at a smaller company. Title and people management not required
- Strong Go: architecture, concurrency, WebSocket services, and API first development with OpenAPI and ogen
- Production TypeScript in strict mode and React experience with a modern full stack framework and real time state management
- Relational database experience with Postgres: schema design, migrations (Goose, Drizzle), connection pooling (pgx), and query performance
- Kubernetes in production (deployments, services, secrets, rollout strategy) and AWS fundamentals (ECS, EKS, RDS, S3)
- Able to work on site in San Carlos, CA
Preferred Skills
- Application development beyond SaaS, in C++ or Python
- AI and LLM features shipped inside a product: OpenAI SDK, LangChain, prompt design, token accounting, and evals
- Experience at a robotics or autonomous vehicle company, or supporting a fleet of physical devices in the field, including provisioning, monitoring, and incident response tooling
- Founder or early engineer experience owning a whole product and deciding what the business needed built
- WebRTC or SFU experience, or the drive to ramp quickly on real time video infrastructure
- 3D or robotics visualization, ROS, or robot middleware
- Mapping, navigation, logistics, or workforce scheduling software
