Camera Hardware Engineer
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Lead the design, evaluation, and integration of compact camera modules into small form factor consumer electronics hardware.
- Select and specify image sensors, lens assemblies, actuators (VCMs), and optical filters tailored to tight optical, thermal, and mechanical constraints.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, firmware, ISP, and industrial design engineering.
- Build, calibrate, and maintain camera test infrastructure, optical test benches, chart targets, and automated test environments.
- Validate sensor performance, including read noise, dark current, dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, and stray light/flare characteristics.
- Optimize system-level image quality through rigorous benchmarking, ISP tuning support, and objective metrics evaluation.
- Partner with module vendors and silicon suppliers on module schematics, driver bring-up, and manufacturing yield improvements.
- Author clear and comprehensive technical specs, test plans, validation reports, and root-cause failure analysis documentation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Imaging Science,
- Physics, or equivalent technical experience.
- 8+ years of experience in camera hardware engineering, optical module integration, or image sensor performance validation.
- Demonstrated experience selecting image sensors, evaluating compact lens options, and defining camera module specifications.
- Hands-on expertise establishing optical test infrastructure, including chart targets, integrating spheres, and lab validation software (e.g., Imatest).
- Strong understanding of image sensor noise metrics, pixel architectures, sensitivity, and optical performance principles.
- Proven track record of root-cause debugging for optical, mechanical, and electrical camera issues across development cycles.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's or PhD in Optical Engineering, Imaging Science, Electrical Engineering, or a
- related field.
- Proficiency with optical simulation tools (e.g., Zemax OpticStudio, Code V) and data processing tools (Matlab, Python).
- Experience with high-speed digital sensor interfaces (e.g., MIPI CSI-2), control buses (I2C/SPI), and board-level hardware integration.
- Familiarity with hardware schematic capture, PCB layout constraints for camera signals, desense mitigation, and power filtering.
- Experience with compact camera module packaging, flex PCB design, active alignment (AA) tools, and factory EOL testing.
- Experience tuning ISP blocks (denoise, sharpening, color correction, tone mapping) on embedded systems.
- WHAT SETS YOU APART
- You combine deep optical bench expertise with holistic system-level thinking across optics, hardware, firmware, and imaging algorithms.
- Hands-on fluency in diagnosing complex image artifacts, sensor noise anomalies, and optical distortion rapidly in the lab.
- You thrive in agile, multi-disciplinary engineering teams, driving high-impact decisions from prototype through mass production.
