Wind Energy Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. WindPro, WAsP, OpenFAST, Python, SCADA analytics platforms, LiDAR/SODAR data tools, GIS, turbine OEM SCADA interfaces
About the role
You will join the engineering team of a wind energy company responsible for the technical performance of operating wind farms and the design of new ones. The team owns everything from wind resource and micrositing to operational analytics and life extension studies. This role matters because a single point of availability or a single percent of wake loss, multiplied across hundreds of megawatts, is worth millions, and your analysis finds it. You will also lead the team's condition monitoring strategy, deciding which drivetrain and blade signals earn a place in the analytics pipeline and which are noise. When OEMs dispute warranty claims, your root-cause analysis and loads documentation will be the evidence that settles the argument. The role covers emerging technology evaluation as well, from vortex-induced vibration mitigations to bat curtailment strategies that satisfy environmental permits without surrendering excessive energy. You will present findings directly to asset managers, so your charts and conclusions need to survive scrutiny from people who own the P&L.
What you will achieve
- Lift fleet availability by 1 to 2 points by diagnosing chronic underperformers through SCADA analytics and driving targeted corrective actions with O&M teams
- Deliver bankable pre-construction yield assessments with wake, curtailment, and availability losses quantified and documented for financing, prioritizing fixes by lost-energy value so O&M budgets chase the biggest returns first
- Cut turbine troubleshooting time by 30 percent by building automated fault-pattern detection and performance benchmarking dashboards
- Own micrositing and layout optimization for repowering and greenfield projects, balancing energy capture against roads, crane pads, and environmental constraints, benchmarked against pre-construction estimates to continuously calibrate the team's loss assumptions
- Drive life-extension and repowering decisions with loads analysis, remaining-useful-life estimates, and CAPEX/OPEX tradeoff models
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in wind energy engineering across development, operations, or technical advisory
- Strong understanding of wind resource assessment, power curves, wake effects, and IEC 61400 design standards
- Proficiency with WindPro, WAsP, or equivalent for flow modeling, layout, and yield calculation
- Ability to analyze SCADA data at scale: 10-minute statistics, alarm codes, and power performance testing per IEC 61400-12
- Working knowledge of turbine systems: drivetrain, pitch, yaw, converter, and control strategies
- Python or similar scripting ability for data pipelines, QA automation, and custom analysis
- Clear reporting skills for technical memos that developers, asset managers, and lenders rely on
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with LiDAR measurement campaigns and data validation
- Familiarity with grid code compliance testing and curtailment strategies
- Exposure to blade inspection analytics or drivetrain CMS data
- Knowledge of repowering engineering and foundation reuse assessment
- Working knowledge of IEC 61400 standards and type certification documentation
