Sensor IC Design Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. ROIC design, photodiodes, transimpedance amplifiers (TIA), low-noise front ends, chopper stabilization, sensor interfaces, Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre
About the role
You will join a sensor semiconductor company designing readout ICs that turn faint physical signals into clean digital data. The team builds the analog front ends for image sensors, LiDAR, and industrial sensing: photodiode interfaces, TIAs, and precision readout chains. This role matters because the sensor is only as good as its readout: your noise floor and dynamic range decide what the system can actually detect. New sensing modalities appear every year, and the readout team is usually the first to touch them. The work spans consumer, automotive, and industrial sensing, so no two projects look alike.
What you will achieve
- Ship readout chains that hit noise, bandwidth, and dynamic-range targets on first silicon across illumination and temperature corners
- Design transimpedance amplifiers and front ends optimized for specific detectors, balancing gain, noise, and power for each sensor type
- Cut input-referred noise through chopper stabilization, correlated double sampling, or auto-zero techniques matched to the signal band
- Deliver sensor interfaces with calibration and trimming that hold accuracy over lifetime drift and process variation
- Drive electro-optical characterization with customers' detectors, correlating measured responsivity and dark current against your models
- Support system integration, resolving grounding, supply, and timing interactions between your ROIC and the customer's sensor assembly
- Prototype readout concepts for emerging sensor types, giving the company early-mover advantage in new markets
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2-5 years designing sensor interfaces or readout ICs with at least one shipped sensing product
- Strong low-noise design skills: you can budget noise across a signal chain and know which stage dominates
- Design experience with transimpedance amplifiers, charge amplifiers, or precision sensor front ends
- Understanding of photodiode and detector behavior: capacitance, dark current, responsivity, and their circuit implications
- Proficiency in Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre, including noise analysis and transient simulation of sampled systems
- Familiarity with offset and 1/f noise mitigation: chopping, auto-zero, and correlated double sampling
- B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering with an analog or sensor circuits emphasis
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with image sensor, LiDAR, or time-of-flight readout architectures
- Familiarity with pixel-level design or large array readout considerations
- Prior work with MEMS or capacitive sensor interfaces
