Renewable Energy Electrical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. PV system design, string sizing and inverter selection, medium-voltage collection systems, ETAP or SKM, SCADA for renewables, performance modeling (PVsyst), NEC Article 690, IV curve testing
About the role
You will design the electrical systems of utility-scale solar plants at an EPC company delivering projects from 20 to 300 megawatts across diverse terrains and climates. Your designs balance energy yield, capital cost, and thirty-year reliability across tens of thousands of components in harsh outdoor environments. You will produce the DC array designs, AC collection systems, and interconnection packages that get built exactly as drawn, then verify during commissioning that the plant performs the way your models promised. You will design the electrical systems of solar and wind plants, from collection systems and inverters through substations and grid interconnection. Your designs will maximize energy yield while meeting utility requirements for power quality, fault ride-through, and reactive power capability. You will support commissioning and performance testing to prove the plant delivers what the models promised.
What you will achieve
- Deliver complete electrical designs for utility-scale PV plants, including DC array layouts, inverter station designs, MV collection systems, and substation interfaces, all construction-ready.
- Optimize DC-to-AC ratios, string sizing, and equipment selection with PVsyst modeling to maximize project IRR within equipment and interconnection constraints.
- Achieve clean construction handoffs with designs that minimize RFIs and field changes through thorough coordination, constructability review, and clash detection before issue-for-construction.
- Support commissioning with IV curve testing, thermal imaging review, and performance ratio verification against modeled expectations, closing the loop between design and reality.
- Reduce balance-of-system costs year over year through value engineering of wire management, combiner strategies, cable routing, and equipment selection without compromising long-term reliability.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing electrical systems for solar PV plants at commercial or utility scale.
- Strong understanding of PV system behavior: IV curves, mismatch losses, soiling, temperature coefficients, and degradation.
- Ability to design MV collection systems and specify switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and protection schemes.
- Proficiency with NEC Article 690 and utility interconnection requirements for generation facilities.
- Experience producing construction-ready drawing packages coordinated with civil and structural disciplines.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- NABCEP PV Installation Professional or design-related credential.
- Experience with battery energy storage co-located with solar PV plants.
- Familiarity with single-axis tracker systems and their electrical and controls interfaces.
- Knowledge of performance guarantees and liquidated damages structures in EPC contracts.
