R&D Hardware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Advanced prototyping, novel sensor integration, emerging wireless standards, custom analog front ends, rapid iteration methodology, evaluation platforms, characterization automation, patent drafting support
About the role
You will work in the advanced development lab exploring what the next generation of hardware can do before product teams are ready to bet on it. R&D hardware engineers prototype with unreleased components, evaluate emerging technologies against honest criteria, and prove concepts that product teams will not touch yet. You will have access to the newest silicon, the freedom to try unconventional approaches, and the responsibility to produce honest, transferable results: working prototypes, measured data, and clear-eyed assessments of what is ready for productization and what is not. Intellectual honesty matters more here than optimism.
What you will achieve
- Build working prototypes of next-generation concepts spanning novel sensors, new wireless standards, and advanced power techniques on aggressive timelines
- Deliver honest technology assessments with measured data covering capabilities, limitations, cost implications, and readiness for product teams
- Create evaluation platforms and reference designs that product teams can adopt directly, substantially cutting their development risk
- File invention disclosures and patents on novel circuit approaches discovered during research work, building the company's IP portfolio
- Kill weak concepts early with decisive experiments and clear write-ups, focusing investment and attention on the approaches with real promise
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 4 to 7 years of hardware design experience with demonstrated ability to prototype quickly and independently with minimal supervision
- Strong fundamentals across analog, digital, and RF basics, enabling you to evaluate unfamiliar technologies fast and accurately
- Comfort with ambiguity: incomplete datasheets, pre-release silicon, and specifications that change mid-project without warning
- Excellent lab skills for characterizing unknown components and subsystems from first principles with creative test setups
- Clear technical writing for research reports, technology assessments, and transfer documentation that product teams can act on
- Self-direction in defining your own experiments, milestones, and success criteria within open-ended research spaces
- BS in Electrical Engineering; MS preferred for research depth
Nice-to-haves
- Patent filings or publications in hardware, sensors, or wireless domains with recognized contributions
- Experience with university or research lab collaborations and joint development programs
- Familiarity with grant-funded or internal R&D project structures, milestones, and technical reporting requirements
- Breadth into adjacent fields such as materials, optics, or MEMS that inform hardware innovation directions
