Product Hardware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Sustaining engineering, cost reduction, component lifecycle management, failure analysis, ECO execution, manufacturing support, BOM management, alternate qualification
About the role
You will own hardware products after launch: the sustaining engineering that keeps shipping products profitable, reliable, and available year after year. Product hardware engineers handle component end-of-life transitions, cost reduction redesigns, factory issues, and the steady stream of improvements that separate mature products from declining ones. You will become the deepest expert on your products' hardware and the person everyone calls when something goes wrong in the factory or the field. It is unglamorous, high-leverage work: every dollar of cost saved and every line-down crisis averted flows directly to the bottom line. Engineers who master this domain become indispensable because they understand the product better than anyone else in the building.
What you will achieve
- Manage component obsolescence proactively: last-time buys, drop-in replacements, and redesigns executed well before stock runs out
- Deliver cost reduction redesigns typically saving 5 to 15% of BOM cost without quality escapes or customer-visible changes
- Resolve factory and field issues quickly with rigorous root-cause analysis and corrective actions that genuinely prevent recurrence
- Maintain product documentation including BOMs, drawings, and test procedures as accurate living records through every single change
- Drive continuous product improvements based on field data: reliability fixes, manufacturability improvements, targeted feature refinements, and documentation updates
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in hardware engineering with direct experience supporting products through production and into maturity
- Experience with ECO processes: documenting changes thoroughly, assessing cross-functional impact, and managing implementation across teams
- Understanding of component lifecycle management: PCNs, EOL notices, and structured qualification of alternate components
- Ability to perform failure analysis and root-cause investigation on production and field issues with clear written conclusions
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes sufficient to resolve build issues directly with contract manufacturers
- Cost awareness: BOM analysis skills, should-cost modeling, and design trade-offs evaluated for margin improvement
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with value engineering programs delivering significant documented cost savings on mature products
- Knowledge of regulatory recertification requirements and testing triggered by product changes
- Familiarity with PLM systems and formal change control workflows in production environments
- Experience with product line extensions: variants, derivatives, and platform reuse strategies
