Mechanical Test Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Test rig and fixture design, data acquisition (strain gauges, accelerometers, load cells), LabVIEW or Python, environmental chambers, vibration tables, statistical test design, uncertainty analysis
About the role
You will own mechanical validation at a company manufacturing bicycle suspension components where ride feel, tunability, and durability are the brand promise. Your test rigs and protocols prove that every design survives real trails, performs as the kinematics promised, and lasts for years of hard riding. You will design test methods from requirements and failure risks, build the fixtures that replicate real-world loading, execute disciplined campaigns, and turn raw data into clear verdicts that engineering trusts for release decisions. You will design and execute mechanical test programs that prove products meet their requirements, from vibration and shock to fatigue and environmental exposure. Your test data will be rigorous enough to support design decisions and regulatory submissions.
What you will achieve
- Develop test plans covering structural strength, fatigue life, environmental exposure, and performance characteristics for each new suspension platform, with acceptance criteria tied to requirements.
- Build custom test rigs and fixtures that replicate real-world loading spectra, delivering repeatable results across operators, shifts, and test stands.
- Cut test cycle time significantly by automating data acquisition and analysis, producing same-day analyzed results from overnight test runs with automated anomaly flagging.
- Correlate laboratory test results with field data from instrumented bikes, refining test methods iteratively until lab failures accurately predict field failure modes and locations.
- Deliver clear test reports with statistical grounding (sample sizes, confidence, Weibull fits where applicable) that give engineering the evidence to release or the direction to redesign.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of mechanical test engineering experience on hardware products with real validation responsibility.
- Ability to design test plans from requirements, standards, and structured risk analysis.
- Proficiency with data acquisition hardware and software: strain gauges, accelerometers, load cells, signal conditioning, and sampling strategy.
- Experience with LabVIEW or Python for test automation, data processing, and visualization.
- Strong understanding of fatigue testing, accelerated life methods, and rainflow counting for variable-amplitude loading.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with sporting goods, bicycles, or consumer durability testing.
- Familiarity with composite material testing methods and failure modes.
- Background in field data collection with instrumented products and correlation studies.
- Knowledge of suspension kinematics and damper characterization.
