Junior Nuclear Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Engineering calculation fundamentals, MCNP or SCALE basics, Excel and Python, plant systems training, procedure use and adherence, technical writing basics, mentoring program
About the role
You will begin your nuclear engineering career at a power utility or vendor organization, learning the discipline of nuclear-quality work alongside experienced engineers invested in your development. The team provides structured mentoring, progressively challenging assignments, and the training every nuclear engineer needs. You will perform calculations, support analyses, and learn why the industry's standards exist. This role matters because nuclear excellence is built deliberately through mentorship and rigor, and this is where your foundation in safety culture and technical discipline gets established correctly. You will also rotate through operations, maintenance, and engineering departments to build the plant-wide perspective great engineers need. Your questions will be welcomed and expected, because the engineers mentoring you remember starting exactly where you are. You will document your work to the same standards as everyone else from day one, learning that quality is a habit, not a seniority privilege. Your training will include simulator time so you understand the plant you analyze.
What you will achieve
- Complete assigned calculations and analyses to nuclear quality standards within your first year.
- Finish the team's engineer qualification program including systems training and safety culture fundamentals.
- Contribute to real design changes or analyses under supervision, with work products accepted by reviewers.
- Develop proficiency with at least one industry analysis code through guided application.
- Earn Engineer-in-Training certification within the first two years with company support.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 0 to 2 years of experience; recent graduates in nuclear engineering or related fields are welcome.
- Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related technical field.
- Strong academic fundamentals in reactor theory, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
- Willingness to learn nuclear quality standards: documentation, verification, and conservative decision-making.
- Attention to detail: in nuclear work, small errors have large consequences.
- Coachability: you seek feedback, ask questions, and learn from every review comment.
- Genuine interest in nuclear energy and its role in clean power generation.
Nice-to-haves
- Internship or co-op experience at a nuclear facility or vendor.
- Familiarity with any industry analysis codes from academic coursework.
- Engineer-in-Training certification already completed.
- Research or project experience in reactor-related topics.
