IoT Firmware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Bluetooth LE (GATT, advertising), WiFi on microcontrollers, MQTT/CoAP with TLS, ultra-low-power design, secure OTA updates, sensor integration and calibration, mobile app interfacing, IoT security fundamentals
About the role
You will build the firmware inside connected IoT products that millions of people install in their homes, offices, and industrial sites. IoT firmware engineers own the complete device experience end to end: sensor integration, wireless connectivity, cloud communication, mobile app interfacing, and the over-the-air updates that keep devices improving long after sale. You will balance battery life against responsiveness, security against usability, and cost against capability on every single program. Your firmware is the product as far as the user is concerned: when everything works seamlessly, nobody notices your work at all, which is precisely the goal.
What you will achieve
- Ship IoT products with genuinely reliable connectivity: robust BLE and WiFi provisioning flows, stable cloud connections, and graceful offline behavior
- Deliver industry-leading battery life through aggressive, system-level power optimization validated with months of long-term current profiling
- Build secure OTA update systems with cryptographic verification, automatic rollback protection, and carefully staged fleet rollouts
- Integrate diverse sensors with accurate, factory-calibrated readings and intelligent on-device processing that reduces cloud dependency and latency
- Create seamless mobile app pairing and control experiences through well-designed BLE services, clear protocols, and thorough interoperability testing
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years developing firmware for connected IoT products that shipped to real customers at meaningful volumes
- Experience with Bluetooth LE in depth: GATT service design, advertising strategies, connection management, bonding, and interoperability testing
- Familiarity with WiFi on resource-constrained microcontrollers: provisioning flows, intelligent reconnection logic, and power management trade-offs
- Understanding of IoT cloud communication protocols: MQTT, CoAP, or HTTP-based device messaging, all secured properly with TLS
- Low-power design expertise: sleep mode architecture, wake source selection, and system-level energy budgeting validated by measurement
- Knowledge of robust OTA update design: dual-bank flash architectures, cryptographic image verification, and bulletproof failure recovery
- BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with Matter, Apple HomeKit, or Google Home ecosystems including their certification processes
- Familiarity with cellular IoT technologies (LTE-M, NB-IoT) for products requiring reliable wide-area connectivity
- Knowledge of IoT security best practices: device identity provisioning, remote attestation, and fleet vulnerability management
- Experience with voice assistant integration or audio processing pipelines on constrained devices
