Hydrogen/Fuel Cell Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Aspen Plus/HYSYS, fuel cell test stations, electrolyzer performance tools, Python, P&ID development (AutoCAD), hydrogen safety codes (NFPA 2, CGA)
About the role
You will join a clean energy company developing green hydrogen production and fuel cell power systems for heavy transport, industrial heat, and long-duration storage. The engineering team owns electrolyzer and fuel cell system design, from stack integration through balance-of-plant and controls. This role matters because hydrogen economics hinge on efficiency, durability, and safety engineered in from day one, and your designs determine whether projects clear the cost targets that unlock scale. You will work across the hydrogen value chain from production through end use, since electrolyzer sizing, compression, storage, and fuel cell integration all interact. The role includes navigating an immature codes landscape, applying NFPA 2, CGA guidelines, and evolving international standards to first-of-a-kind projects. You will build techno-economic models that compare green hydrogen against electrification and other decarbonization pathways on a levelized basis. Pilot learnings will feed directly into your designs, so you will stay close to operating data and honest about where the technology still falls short.
What you will achieve
- Deliver hydrogen system designs (electrolyzer plants up to 100 MW, fuel cell power modules) with modeled round-trip or conversion efficiencies validated within 3 points of test data
- Cut balance-of-plant cost by 15 percent through standardized skids for water treatment, compression, and thermal management, validated against vendor performance guarantees and third-party test data
- Own P&IDs, HAZOP actions, and safety system design per NFPA 2, ensuring zero lost-time incidents across pilot and demonstration plants
- Drive stack supplier selection with durability test data, degradation rate analysis, and $/kg or $/kW total-cost models, with sensitivity analysis on electricity price, capacity factor, and policy support
- Ship commissioning and operating procedures that bring first-of-a-kind systems to steady operation within planned schedule
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience with hydrogen systems, fuel cells, electrolyzers, or adjacent gas-processing engineering
- Strong understanding of PEM and alkaline electrolyzer operation, plus PEM or SOFC fuel cell principles
- Working knowledge of hydrogen safety: leak detection, ventilation, area classification, and NFPA 2/CGA requirements
- Ability to develop P&IDs, equipment datasheets, and system-level mass and energy balances
- Familiarity with hydrogen compression, storage (gaseous and liquid), and dispensing equipment
- Process simulation skills in Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or equivalent for system modeling
- Disciplined documentation for HAZOP, MOC, and regulatory permit filings
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with hydrogen production tax credit (45V) qualification and lifecycle emissions analysis
- Knowledge of fuel cell vehicle or stationary power integration
- Exposure to ammonia or methanol as hydrogen carriers
- Understanding of power-to-X project development and offtake structures
- Familiarity with hydrogen safety practices including area classification and ventilation design
