The job description
Tech stack. C, TCP/IP stacks (lwIP), Ethernet, CAN/CAN FD, USB device/host, TLS/mbedTLS, socket programming, Wireshark, network debugging
About the role
You will join an industrial gateway company whose products bridge factory-floor protocols to enterprise networks. The connectivity team owns every wire and packet: Ethernet, USB, CAN, and the TCP/IP stacks that carry the data. This role matters because a gateway that drops packets or misbehaves on the network is worse than no gateway at all, and customers deploy these boxes by the thousand into networks they do not control.
What you will achieve
- Ship a multi-interface gateway firmware supporting concurrent Ethernet, USB, and CAN FD traffic with zero packet loss at rated throughput over 72-hour soak tests, with soak test results archived as release evidence for every firmware version
- Drive TCP/IP stack robustness (lwIP-based) to survive 72-hour network chaos testing: link flaps, DHCP storms, and hostile peers, with automatic recovery every time, and recovery-time metrics reported in the test summary
- Reduce interoperability failures with customer networks by 50% through hardened DHCP, DNS, and VLAN handling validated against the top 20 customer topologies
- Build a USB device/host stack supporting three device classes with hot-plug reliability validated across 1,000 insertion cycles without a single enumeration failure
- Own the connectivity test lab, maintaining a matrix of switches, routers, and protocol analyzers that reproduces customer topologies on demand for support escalations, with the lab booking calendar kept current for all teams
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2-5 years implementing connectivity on embedded targets: Ethernet, USB, CAN, or TCP/IP stacks in shipping products
- Strong C with socket-level networking experience on constrained devices with limited buffers
- Hands-on lwIP or similar embedded TCP/IP stack: configuration, tuning, and debugging under adverse conditions
- Experience with USB stacks (device and/or host), including descriptor design and class driver implementation
- Working knowledge of CAN/CAN FD at the driver and protocol level, including error frame handling
- TLS integration experience on embedded targets using mbedTLS or equivalent, including certificate management
- Protocol debugging fluency: Wireshark, bus analyzers, and reading RFCs when observed behavior is ambiguous
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with industrial protocols over these transports such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or Modbus TCP
- Knowledge of time-sensitive networking (TSN) or PTP time synchronization
- Familiarity with cellular modem integration including AT commands, PPP, or MBIM
