The job description
Tech stack. reliability analysis (MTBF, MTTR), spares modeling, obsolescence management, level-of-repair analysis, technical manuals, FRACAS, lifecycle cost modeling
About the role
You will join a defense technology company that measures success in decades of service, not just delivery day, because a system that cannot be sustained cannot be counted on. The sustainment team keeps fielded systems available, affordable, and supportable for their full service life, spanning reliability engineering, spares, obsolescence, and maintenance planning. Your analyses decide what breaks, what gets stocked, where it gets fixed, and what it all costs over twenty years, and your lifecycle cost models inform design decisions made today.
What you will achieve
- Build reliability predictions that forecast MTBF within 25 percent of early field data, giving the program an honest availability baseline.
- Optimize spares provisioning to hold 95 percent parts availability while cutting inventory cost by 20 percent against the initial estimate.
- Stand up a FRACAS process that captures every field failure, drives root cause analysis, and closes corrective actions in under 60 days.
- Deliver a proactive obsolescence plan covering the top 50 at-risk components, with qualified replacements identified before any line stoppage.
- Produce level-of-repair analyses that define what gets fixed where, balancing depot investment against field maintenance burden.
- Deliver an integrated sustainment plan linking reliability predictions to spares, manpower, and depot requirements for a fielded system.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- You bring 2 to 5 years of experience in reliability, maintainability, logistics, or sustainment engineering.
- You can build and defend reliability predictions, FMECAs, and maintainability analyses for complex systems.
- You understand spares modeling, including demand forecasting and the tradeoff between availability and inventory cost.
- You are familiar with obsolescence management: monitoring, lifetime buys, and redesign triggers.
- You write technical manuals, maintenance procedures, or support documentation that maintainers can actually use.
- You think in lifecycle cost, and you can show how a design choice today drives support cost for decades.
- You have built lifecycle cost models that quantify how design choices drive decades of support cost.
Nice-to-haves
- You have worked depot, intermediate, or organizational level maintenance operations.
- You bring experience with reliability growth testing or accelerated life testing.
- You have supported provisioning conferences or logistics demonstrations.
- You hold an active security clearance or can obtain one.
- You bring experience with performance-based logistics or availability contracting concepts.
