Custom Mixed Signal Designer
The job description
Tech stack. Cadence Virtuoso (full-custom), Spectre, Calibre, Virtuoso Layout XL, SKILL, EMX, advanced matching flows
About the role
You will do bespoke full-custom mixed-signal design at a fabless semiconductor company that refuses to compromise on its critical analog blocks. The team hand-crafts the circuits that standard cells and digital-assisted techniques cannot touch: precision front ends, custom data paths, and one-off blocks where every transistor is placed with intent. This role matters because these custom blocks are the reason the product beats its competitors on the specs that matter most. You will work directly with the architects who define these blocks, and your hand-crafted layouts will be studied by the rest of the team as examples of the craft.
What you will achieve
- Ship two to three full-custom mixed-signal blocks per year where you own both schematic and layout, delivering hand-optimized designs that beat synthesized or semi-custom alternatives on power, area, or performance.
- Drive precision through craft: custom matching structures, thermal-gradient-aware floorplans, and parasitic-balanced routing that hold offset and drift specs across temperature with margin.
- Reduce area by 15-25% versus auto-placed alternatives on your custom blocks through deliberate device sizing, shared structures, and compact floorplanning you control end to end.
- Own the full-custom sign-off: extracted-view corners, Monte Carlo, EM/IR on your hand-routed power, and DRC/LVS clean on first submission more often than not.
- Cut design iteration time by building your own parameterized cells and SKILL automation for the repetitive custom structures (resistor arrays, capacitor DACs, bias distribution) you reuse across blocks.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2-5 years of full-custom analog/mixed-signal design where you owned both schematic and layout, with tapeouts on your record.
- Expert Virtuoso Layout skills applied to custom analog: matching, symmetry, shielding, and floorplanning you do yourself rather than handing off.
- Deep device-level intuition: you size transistors from first principles (gm/Id, noise, matching) rather than copying reference designs.
- Fluency in Spectre corners, Monte Carlo, and mismatch analysis on your own custom blocks.
- Understanding of thermal gradients, stress effects, and well proximity effects and how to lay out against them.
- Pride in craft: you can point to a layout and explain every placement decision.
Nice-to-haves
- SKILL or Python scripting for custom PCell development and layout automation.
- Experience with custom digital or mixed-signal standard cell design.
- Knowledge of radiation-hardened or high-reliability custom design techniques.
