Clean Energy Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. GHG Protocol tools, energy modeling spreadsheets, PPA evaluation models, Python, utility tariff engines, carbon accounting platforms, GIS
About the role
You will join the sustainability engineering team of a large organization pursuing aggressive decarbonization targets across its operations. The team owns the technical roadmap for clean electricity procurement, on-site generation, and emissions reduction. This role matters because corporate climate commitments are public and audited, and your engineering analysis turns pledges into contracted megawatts, verified emissions cuts, and credible progress reports. You will work across technologies rather than inside one silo, which means your judgment about where solar, storage, efficiency, or electrification delivers the most carbon reduction per dollar is the core value you bring. The role includes tracking clean energy policy, from the IRA tax credit stack to state clean energy standards, and turning those incentives into project structures that pencil out. You will build the emissions accounting models that let customers report Scope 2 reductions with audit-ready documentation. As technologies mature, you will refresh the company's technology screening criteria so business development chases the opportunities with the best risk-adjusted returns.
What you will achieve
- Build the technical case for 100+ MW of clean energy procurement per year through VPPAs, green tariffs, and on-site solar plus storage evaluations
- Cut Scope 2 emissions 25 percent ahead of the company target trajectory by sequencing projects on cost-per-ton-abated economics, with assumptions version-controlled so analyses can be re-run as policies change
- Own hourly load matching and 24/7 carbon-free energy analyses that stand up to auditor and stakeholder scrutiny
- Deliver additionality assessments and project due diligence that keep the clean energy portfolio credible with NGOs and rating agencies, reviewed with finance to confirm incentive capture matches modeled values
- Drive cross-functional execution with real estate, finance, and legal so contracted projects reach operation on schedule
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in clean energy, sustainability engineering, or corporate energy procurement support
- Strong understanding of renewable energy project economics, PPA structures, and REC markets
- Working knowledge of GHG Protocol Scope 2 guidance, including market-based and location-based accounting
- Ability to model hourly load profiles against clean energy supply shapes and storage dispatch
- Familiarity with utility green tariff programs, community solar, and wholesale market basics
- Data analysis skills in Excel and Python for portfolio modeling and scenario comparison
- Persuasive writing and presentation skills for executive and board-level sustainability reporting
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with 24/7 carbon-free energy methodologies or granular certificate markets
- Knowledge of IRA clean energy tax credits and transferability mechanics
- Familiarity with CDP, SBTi, or RE100 reporting frameworks
- Background in energy efficiency or electrification project engineering
- Knowledge of GHG Protocol Scope 2 guidance and market-based accounting
